- This file contains a basic tutorial on Frames, a
- Computer-Aided Instruction (CAI) program by timothy weber. It
- will teach you all you need to know about using Frames to
- look at Frames documents, and you can also look at the Frames
- document itself (TUTORIAL.FRA) for examples of how to create
- your own Frames documents.
- :0
- The first thing you need to know is that a "frame" is one
- screenful of text. You can move up and down from frame to
- frame by using the PgUp and PgDn keys. Press the PgDn key now
- to get to the first frame.
- .
- Good. Now try pressing the PgUp key to return to the frame
- we just left, and then come back here.
- :0
- Note that these screens contain no highlighted text. That's
- why you can move around from frame to frame just by pressing
- the PgUp and PgDn keys. Highlighted text indicates a blank
- that you must complete before continuing. To see an example
- of this, go to the next frame.
- .
- MULTIPLE CHOICE BLANKS
- :0
- The first type of blank we'll look at is a multiple choice
- blank. Here's an example:
- :0
- The name of this program is (Bob Dylan/Ralph/*Frames).
- :0
- Use the Left Arrow key and the Right Arrow key to
- highlight your choice. Then, press Enter to see the right
- answer. Finally, press PgDn to go to the next frame.
- .
- FILL-IN BLANKS
- :0
- The other type of blank is a fill-in blank. To complete a
- fill-in blank, you simply type in it. If you make a mistake,
- you can correct it with the Backspace key or the Home key
- (try them). When you're finished, press Enter to see the
- right answer, then PgDn to go to the next frame.
- :0
- What's your first name? _your name here_
- .
- PROGRESSING THROUGH THE FRAMES
- :0
- Note that you can only use PgUp and PgDn to see all the
- frames you have completed so far. You can't continue on to
- another frame until you have completed all the blanks on the
- last frame, and pressed Enter to see the right answers.
- :0
- Also, once you have seen the right answers, the answers you
- have given are fixed, and you can't change them anymore.
- :0
- You can change your answers in a frame (*before/after) you
- have pressed Enter on that frame.
- .
- FRAMES WITH MORE THAN ONE BLANK
- :0
- Frames can have more than one blank. The blank you're
- working on is highlighted differently from the other blanks.
- Now, for example, you're completing this blank:
- :0
- Frames can have more than one _blank_.
- :0
- When you've finished filling in that blank, you can press the
- Tab key to get to this blank:
- :0
- And to move backwards, hold the Shift key down and press the
- (skeleton/*tab) key.
- :0
- As usual, press the Enter key to see the correct answers,
- then PgDn to go on.
- .
- USING ENTER MOST OF THE TIME
- :0
- The Enter key actually does different things depending on
- where you are. You can use it to finish a field and go to
- the next one, to finish the last field and show the answers,
- and to go to the next frame after you've seen the answers.
- :0
- Therefore, you can work your way through a file by pressing
- Enter after completing each _blank_, and then pressing Enter
- twice after the last blank: once to see the correct
- _answers_, and once to go to the next _frame_.
- .
- GETTING TO THE MENU
- :0
- You used the menu at the top of the screen before when you
- loaded this tutorial. To get to the menu, press the Escape
- key. Then, you can use the Up, Down, Left, and Right keys to
- move around in the menu, and the Enter key to make a
- selection.
- :0
- If you can't remember how to get to the menu, look up to the
- left of the menu bar at the top of the screen; it says "Esc".
- :0
- To get to the menu, press the _Escape_ key. When the menu
- choice you want is highlighted, press the _Enter_ key.
- .
- GETTING TO INDIVIDUAL MENUS QUICKLY
- :0
- If you are in the menu and you don't want to make a
- selection, press Escape again to put the menu away.
- :0
- To get quickly to any individual menu, like File or Util,
- hold down Control and press the first letter of the menu
- name. That is, a short cut to the File menu is to press
- Control-(H/*F/U).
- .
- GETTING TO MENU CHOICES QUICKLY
- :0
- If a menu choice has a letter in parentheses next to it, you
- can choose that menu choice by pressing Control and that
- letter. For instance, a short cut to "Load (L)" is
- Control-(*L/S/P/Q).
- .
- MENU CHOICES: LOADING OTHER FILES
- :0
- To load other files, choose "Load" and type the correct file
- name. I can find the file if it's in the current directory.
- To see a _list_ of what files I can find, choose "List" from
- the Util menu.
- .
- MENU CHOICES: SAVING YOUR ANSWERS
- :0
- If you choose "Save" from the file menu, I'll _save_ your
- answers on disk. I'll ask you your name first, and I'll save
- it with your answers so I can find them again later.
- :0
- When you want to see your answers again (or finish a file you
- hadn't finished before), choose "Restore" from the File menu,
- and I'll load the ones with your _name_ on them.
- .
- PRINTING YOUR ANSWERS
- :0
- If you want to keep a printed record of your answers, choose
- "Print" from the Util menu. It works the same way "Save"
- does, only it prints your answers on _paper/the printer_ instead of
- saving them in a _file_.
- .
- This is the end of this tutorial. If you can't remember what
- key does what, or what each menu choice does, you can get a
- summary by pressing Control-H.
